Alkalise and Energise

One of the areas around foods helping to heal that I talk about to patients is regarding alkalising foods.

Green foods and green drinks are used to help bring our bodies back into balance between acid and alkaline.

Because most of the foods we like such as chocolate, coffee, meat, pasta etc are acid-forming we need to counteract that with some alkalising food. Diseases grow in an acidic environment whereas most won’t grow in an alkaline one.

Rule of thumb – with the exception of cabbage – is that if it is green it is alkalising. Foods like watercress, spinach, cucumber, parsley, celery and fruits like avocado all have an alkalising effect on the body. And of course green tea is also alkalising.

Here is a shake that can help you get your balance more towards alkaline than acid.

Grape and Green Tea Smoothie


  • 3 cups of white seedless grapes
  • 1/2 cucumber peeled and deseeded.
  • 2 packed cups baby spinach
  • 1 teaspoon of Boost green tea powder
  • 1 medium ripe avocado
  • 2 cups of almond milk or water

You can use a almond milk to blend in with this and add a small bit of honey if you want it a bit sweeter.
